prboom (a doom engine) running on dingoo linux

Postby joyrider on Fri May 29, 2009 12:25 am

Hey all i just tried compiling prboom for the dingoo and it works perfectly without any hickups. It still needs some work though like the bottom part of the screen. (it's currently running in 320x200 mode and the 40 left over lines are being duplicated). I also need to add keybindings. I can play the game fine but can't seem to find out the menu button. (one can redefine the keys).
The sound is spot on without any problems. The clicking you hear when the gun fires comes from recording with my webcam, it can't handle the loud sound and i have no way to change the volume recording of my build in microphone.

here's the video :

i just wanted to try it out to see if i could get it to run and if it would actually run smooth and god was i amazed :)

oh yeah the version is compiled from the latest stable version of prboom.

awesome! Nice to see how well it runs with very little modification. If you have any of the other fps that have been made open source may be worthwhile giving them a shot too just to see how far you can push it without much tweaking

that would be pretty awesome!

good work though, its nice to see so many dedicated people working on this stuff.

if quake did run, is there any chance that 'malice' could be brought over? i loved that game so much as a kid. it was an expansion for quake (i think) and one of the best FPSs before half life came around.

that means Heretic should run also...

Maybe Wolfenstein, Spear of Destiny, Rise of the Triad, or Stryfe as well ?

if somebody could get old Apogee (like the original side scroller Duke Nukem and Commander Keen) games to work, That'd be awesome.

I wonder if a DOS emulator kinda like DOSbox is possible.

Wolf3d/SoD would basically be like the Doom port, the engine is open source, just recompile and drop the game data in.
I think RotT is also portable, not sure.

The old Duke and Keen stuff, that's a little hairier. Duke Nukem has no open engine IIRC (except for Duke3D) and we DO have CloneKeen, which would let us play some of the early Keen stuff at least.

DosBox is likely no, as it'd have to emulate the x86 CPU and environment fast enough.. I don't think it's particularly doable, except maybe for reeeeally old stuff.

The Dingoo's suprised me with Linux this far though, who knows?

dosbox ran on the gp2x, although it was probably heavily optimized for arm and indeed it didn't run the newer dos stuff (like don't try running tyrian).

I also got opentyrian compiled it runs but since it want's 8 bits graphics mode (which i think isn't working atm) , the graphics are messed up. And the dingoo can't handle sound + music on that game, music alone it can handle but sound not haven't looked much into it because of the graphics being messed up.

Am looking at prboom again now to see if i can get it to run like it should, should be too hard :)

ok guys, it's fully playable now although a it could do with a few tweaks (like a way to name the save games).

i've uploaded the source code here :
http://dl.openhandhelds.org/cgi-bin/dingoo.cgi?0,0,0,0,46,55

be sure to read the dingoo readme file for vital information !

i also made a new video of me playing the game on the dingoo :)
