Screen comparison between Dingoo and other handhelds

Postby MeneerJansen on Tue Sep 15, 2009 3:42 pm

I thought this might be interesting. Our beloved Dingoo compares to the NDS Lite (gamewise too considered to me). Be it that Dingoo's resolution (for display on TV or watching video's on the road) comes close to VHS video resolution and NDS is not even close. NDS's screen area is somewhat bigger which might just make that little bit of a difference for us senior retro 80's gamers who already need reading glasses. Ha ha. Sony's PSP Lite shines in every department in this category (the Lite added TV out support, remember?), be it that some people think it's a little too bulky to carry around all of the time...

Anyway, not bad for a low budget game, video, MP3 and radio device, isn't it?

Screen comparisons of Dingoo, NDS, PSP ans GBA.
(diagonal, hight X width, aspect ratio, area, megapixel)

Dingoo & GP2X Wiz (2009):
2.8" = 7.1 cm = 5.7 x 4.3 cm (4:3)
320 x 240 pix. = 0.08 Mpix.
O = 24 cm2

NDS lite (2004):
3" = 7.6 cm = 6.1 x 4.6 cm (4:3)
256 x 192 pix. = 0.05 Mpix.
O = 28 cm2

Sony PSP lite (2005):
4.3" = 10.9 cm = 9.5 x 5.3 cm (16:9)
480 x 272 pix. = 0.13 Mpix.
O = 50 cm2

Nintendo GBA-sp (2001):
2,9" = 7.4 cm = 6.1 cm x 4.1 cm (3:2)
240 x 160 pix. = 0.04 Mpix.
O = 25 cm2

iPod Classic:
2.5" = 6.35 cm = 5 cm x 3.8 cm (4:3)
320 x 240 pix. = 0.08 Mpix.
O = 19 cm2

iPhone/iPod Touch:
3.5" = 8.9 cm = 8.2 x 4.9 (3:2)
480 x 320 pix. = 0.15 Mpix.
O = 40 cm2

You know what they say, it's not the size it's how you use it.

That's a nice little list you've given us there thanks for the read. Like you say it's very much price influenced, the PSP relies on it's superior screen for sales where as the DS has the dual screen a touch screen. Dingoo is nice enough I think, movie viewing is perfect imo, I could even clearly read hardcoded subs after converting a video to 320x240 which I thought was good, no framerate issues or anything.

For the price I don't think you can go wrong, I just hope we see more of what it has to offer.

Added the little text "GPX2 Wiz". Indeed, much relies on the price point. All handhelds can be used for almost the same purposes. I am under the impression that the Classic Game emu's are also available for the NDS and PSP. Screenwise however (and that's what we're looking at all of the time in the end ;) ) there's not much of a difference, exept for the PSP which is superior (as it is 3D gamewise, but that's another story).

I have had NES and Snes roms running on the DSlite but it's not as easy or as compatible as the dingoo. Can't comment on the PSP though, but I've heard it's very good.

Converting videos for DS lite for use on a flashcart is a bit of a pain too in comparison.

Youtube video comment states they're both playing "the same video".

However, they also mention the differences between their formats (XVID vs x264, 320x240 vs 368x208, mp3 vs aac).

So, it's comparing apples and oranges really IMO... Best try to compare performance using the exact same video file as input, not a converted one for the PSP.

Yeah you're right I didn't see that.

Still it gives a good indication how good it is on the Dingoo.

Added screen specs for the iPod Classic and the iPhone/iPod Touch.

As you can see the Dingoo is more useful as a portable video player than an iPod "Classic" (what they call the classic now-a-days used to be called the iPod "Video") because of its bigger screen. Pixelwise its the same. The iPod Classic is, in my opinion, more value for your bucks memory wise (that is: about 120 GB for 220 Euro, compared to the 4 GB/63 Euro for the Dingoo). Considering that I am a great convinced Apple hater (I think that there is no bigger Apple hater than me in the Universe) that is a great compliment for the "Classic".

Our Dingoo is a bit difficult to compare the uber expensive heavily overpriced iPod Touch (an iPhone that cannot 'phone') screen wise. The screen is, obviously, bigger and boosts more pixes (and, at that price point, must have better backlight etc.). However, the 3:2 (1.5:1) aspect ratio makes it a bit quirky for watching movies. Movies are typically of 4:3 (1.33:1) or 16:9 (1.78:1) screen ratio. That means if you're watching an old TV show (4:3) on yer iPod that you're wasting about 50 of your precious pixels horizontally. If you want to watch a modern TV show or movie (mostly 16:9 aspect ratio) that means you're transforming a total of about 50 scanlines into blackborders above and below your movie. The Dingoo has this black border problem too if you're watching a 16:9 movie of course, but I thing that's acceptable at the price point and intended use (i.e. el cheapo classic 4:3 gaming and zooming in on 16:9 movies). I think Apple should have went the Sony PSP way and offer their users a 16:9 screen for their portable multi media gadget.

I love the option for full screen on the Dingoo, I despise black bars and it saves me having to convert if I'm in a rush.
