There's a script for that, and I believe in the newer rootfs you can do it by button combination.
Does the loud sound in linux cause your screen to flicker? Or is it just an issue with my unit?

No screen flickering. Is there a file that I could eit under the reminiscence folder that will remove the sound all together?
