openMSX for Dingux prerelease

Postby mth on Sat Aug 01, 2009 6:00 pm

Today an early prerelease of openMSX (MSX emulator) was made available for Dingux. If you are interested in MSX games, please give it a try!

Known issues:
  • key mapping does not suit every game
  • startup and state loading are slow
  • sound stutters if CPU hits 100%

You can get it from the openMSX downloads section at SourceForge. Please follow the included instructions, available as release notes and README.txt inside the ZIP.

Hi,

Can't get it to work. Just keeps going back to menu when select .exe in the bin folder or select a .rom file.

/usr/local/bin/openmsx-start.sh

thats the file you have to use. If you open that file it specifically says you cant run the main openmsx file.

To Mth,

Excellent job. Very good speed and nice menu. Ok, I think you need 1 & 2 mapped to some button combination.

Can't play Antartic Adventure as you need to Select 1 - Keyboard or 2 - Joystick.

Perhaps down + L for 1 and Down + R for 2

Cheers

I forgot to mention the startup process in the readme. I'm glad some of you figured it out already. I'll add it in the next release.

Does anyone know why the "openvt" part is needed in "openmsx-startup.sh"? Without that, I cannot get SDL to open a video mode. Do all SDL-based programs have this problem or is there something specific to openMSX that triggers it?

I'm not sure yet how to handle the key mappings. For example the digits are used to start the old Konami games, but not for much else, so it's overkill to assign a single key to them. A key combo could work, but then you have to remember all the combos. An alternative might be to add a virtual keyboard in the OSD menu or as a separate OSD element.

How about configurable key mappings for each game? I wouldn't mind configuring the controls by editing some config file on the PC, unless you can get it going from ingame.

Hi,

Firstly the machine crashes when exiting the emulator.

Second, A600 has just released a Spectrum Emu with a Virtual keyboard. The source code is available. Perhaps you can use that as that seems the best route.

Thirdly I would like to set my own space bar (fire) , as button B rather than X.
